and i am flabbergasted. remember the time a couple of weeks ago when i posted that i'd been instructed to take 325mg of IRON 2x daily? and then i filed a complaint with the upmc ethics office? well, today, i called back to have the report read to me. i stopped the reader a few sentences after this point, because i could no longer process what he was saying:
this response is to the above-referenced compliance reported on May 25. [reads back to me the narrative of my complaint as filed.]
UPMC investigated this matter. the instructions that ellen provided is the correct medication and dosage. the standard for adult doses of iron supplements is the 325 mg tablet. these tablets contain 65 mg of elemental iron with the remainder made up of other minerals. as she was instructed to take two supplements per day, she would have taken 130 mg.
what? no! that is NOT AT ALL THE SAME. she told me to take 325mg of IRON TWICE DAILY. had i followed that instruction, i would have taken WAY more than that. i cannot believe that this is the resolution they found! (i heard him go on about "communication error" and that she didn't tell me to buy a particular brand name—since when is "iron" a brand name of "ferrous sulfate"??) i am mortified.
i requested that a written copy be sent to me so that i can really be sure i'm absorbing it all. i just cannot believe it. am i wrong here?
nurse phones you and says, "take 325mg of iron daily."
go google iron and tell me how many pills you'd need to take to get 325mg of iron. i'll wait.
okay, now you phone her back and request clarification. you find out that it's really 325mg of ferrous sulfate you're supposed to take, which is PRESENT in 65mg of iron.
wtf? what am i missing here??
